It’s been a while so I thought it would be nice to put together a little video of my process rendering the entrance of the Repair Center on TS-5B.
Once again you can see how I go from a rough sketch to a more detailed line drawing that is then used as an underlay for the vector line work. For views like this I will most certainly always make a few quick colour sketches over the final frame sketch. One of these will then be used as a colour cue for the final rendering. It’s funny how working digitally can still feel very organic, if only from a colour perspective. If you see what I mean.
If there is a need for it, I’m not shy of recycling existing drawing as backdrops. They do have to serve their purpose so I’m not saying I do this systematically, far from it. The example of the scene with Charlie showing Wayne the way out is a good one. The focus of page 24 is on Charlie saying goodbye to the captain. You can clearly distinguish the background that sends you right back to page 20 when Wayne enters the repair centre (the video refers to it as page 21, my bad. it should be page 20). He’s right back where he was 15 minutes earlier only now he’s gained knowledge that will allow him to move forward in his investigation.
