This is sometimes how it feels when I’m writing and finding the story. On Cpt Wayne, my approach has been like this: I put characters in a situation and then I see what happens. What I mean is quite simple, really: it’s my characters that found the story for me, I just take notes.

Directing

I’m not saying I suffer from having split personality and that there are people talking in my head. When I started writing the script for Cpt Wayne, I focused on what my purpose was with telling the story, I figured out what the pivotal plot points were, what my 1st, 2nd and 3rd acts were (I like to look at it more as an introduction, development and conclusion rather than acts) and then I let the characters do the rest.

I will give you that they might need a push or slight nudge once in a while but I always make it a point to let the protagonists make their own decisions based on their personalities, background, motivation, etc. I’m convinced good character development is as essential as story structure.
