So here we finally have it: the Captaincy, where our story will really quick off.
In my original script, Wayne was meant to start the book at a shooting range but that was a bit too generic in my mind. I started thinking about what pass time the captain could indulge in and this is what I came up with and that brought the intro with the dummies about at the same time.
The video below illustrates my process quite well. I’ll reassure you straight away, I didn’t build 3D model for everything!
I will give more details about how I go about drawing everything in vector on another occasion. For the vast majority of the frames I used my storyboard sketches as underlay for more detailed sketches.
In this case, I really needed to work things out in 3D to make the design cohesive – if only for myself- and it did help a lot in that respect. I though about making a physical mock up at first but this seemed a lot quicker and I didn’t want to transform the living room into a workshop. As you will see in the image gallery, the final look of the space station did not just pop in my head. I actually had a very different idea at first that I finalised but changed my mind at the last minute and redesigned it from the ground up. It was totally worth it in my eyes and I think the new design works a lot better in more ways than one.
