Digital crash test dummies on the loose, don’t ask me how I came up with this, I honestly don’t recall!
I wanted to create an intro that had no real connection to the rest of the book. I liked the idea of a snippet of other people’s lives that takes place right along the main story. Our four dummies are entities with real problems and are obsviouly in a precarious situation. Their simple programming (they are dummies after all) limits their aptitude to handle the situation adequately and they each react according to their software profiles.
Ang is short for Angry, summarizing that dummy’s software profile. The others ones are Prancy, Pretty and Doggy. In this weeks concept gallery I’m sharing a few quick conceptual doodles for these characters. I pretty much figured out the colour look as I was making the final page and used the storyboard as an underlay for the separate frames. I needed to define the looks of the dummies quickly as I knew they would only appear in the first two pages.

I like “prancy” as a definition for total programming failure. I hope there will be a follow-up on their fate at some point ( like in the opening pages of the sequel to CWATUD, released early to build up momentum on the 8th anniversary of the launch of the first edition of CWATUD). See I’m patient? I even managed to wait until Monday!
